The coil is a wear part. It contains a heating element surrounded by cotton. The cotton absorbs the liquid; the wire heats it to form vapor. When one gets gunked up or the other heats poorly, the flavors change well before the gear actually fails.
There is no schedule that works for everyone. The e-liquid, the power, how often you use it and the way you prime it all change its lifespan. The right indicators are taste, sound, the amount of vapor and the condition of the cotton.
What does the value in ohms mean?
The ohm, written Ω, measures electrical resistance. At the same voltage, a low value draws more current. It is often associated with higher power and a more open draw. A high value generally works at more moderate power with a tight draw.
These are not rules of taste. First follow the power range printed on the coil and the compatibility stated for the clearomizer. Apogée coils come in values suited to MTL and RDL. Titan 0.4 Ω coils are designed for the Titan clearomizer and a DL draw.
A box mod may display a value slightly different from the one engraved. However, a reading that jumps noticeably during use often signals a poor contact, a loose coil or a damaged component.
How do you recognize a worn coil?
The first sign is often a less distinct flavor. You may also notice a dark or burnt note, get less vapor at the same setting, hear persistent gurgling or need to raise the power to get back the usual result.
Before replacing the coil, rule out the simple causes. Check the liquid level, the air opening and the power. A nearly empty tank may no longer feed the cotton properly. Power that is too low can let liquid accumulate; power that is too high can dry out the wick.
The e-liquid plays a role. A very sweet recipe or one rich in vegetable glycerin can deposit residue faster. Frequent use puts more strain on the cotton. Rather than counting days, compare the result with that of a new, well-primed coil.
Replace the coil without causing a leak
Work on a clear surface with a piece of paper towel. Close the airflow if the model allows it. If the coil comes out from the bottom, turn the clearomizer upside down when the manual says so, to keep the liquid in the tank.
- Separate the clearomizer from the battery or the box mod.
- Open the base following the model's manual.
- Remove the used coil without bending the chimney.
- Wipe the base, the seal seats and the air channel.
- Insert the new coil the right way round, without forcing.
- Close by hand and check that the seals stay in place.
On the Apogée 24, access is through the base and the coil comes out without unscrewing. On another clearomizer, the procedure may differ. The Titanide manuals remain the reference for the order of disassembly.
How do you prime the cotton correctly?
A new coil arrives dry. Put a few drops of e-liquid on the openings where the cotton is visible. Do not pour into the central channel: it carries air, not liquid. Install the coil, fill the tank and wait for the wick to soak.
The time depends on the coil and the viscosity of the e-liquid. For some models, Titanide product pages indicate a wait of 15 to 20 minutes. When no duration is specified, let the cotton absorb without rushing.
On a regulated box mod, start at the bottom of the recommended range. Take short, spaced puffs, then increase in small steps if needed. If a burnt taste appears immediately, stop. Cotton that is already burnt does not return to its original state when you add liquid.
How do you fix a clearomizer that gurgles?
Gurgling often indicates liquid in the chimney or the air chamber. It can happen after filling, with power that is too low, after a large temperature change or with a misplaced seal.
Remove the clearomizer from the mod. Wipe the 510 connection and the accessible channel without inserting any metal object into the coil. Check the hand tightness and the condition of the seals. If the problem comes back with an old coil, replace it.
Do not suddenly increase the power to "burn off" the excess. You risk overheating the cotton. Go back to the range intended by the manufacturer and make small corrections.
How do you extend its lifespan?
- Keep the liquid inlets submerged.
- Respect the indicated power range.
- Prime each new coil without rushing.
- Avoid chaining puffs if the cotton does not have time to refill.
- Clean the tank when you make a marked change of flavor.
- Replace damaged seals rather than tightening harder.
The Coils category lets you find the consumables actually in the catalog. Always check the clearomizer's name and the value before ordering; two coils that look alike are not necessarily interchangeable.
Frequently asked questions
How long can a coil last?
Its lifespan varies with the e-liquid, the power and how often you use it. Replace it when flavor drops, the taste degrades or feeding problems persist.
Do you need to empty the tank to replace it?
Not always. Some models allow access through the base by turning the tank upside down. Follow the clearomizer's manual to avoid spills.
Does a lower-ohm coil necessarily give a better result?
No. It mainly draws more current at the same voltage. The result also depends on the airflow, the e-liquid, the power and the clearomizer's design.
