MTL, RDL or DL: understanding the draw before you buy

MTL, RDL or DL: tell the draws apart, and the role of airflow and coils, to choose an atomizer that suits the way you vape every day.

The draw describes how air flows through the atomizer and how you pull the vapor in. MTL, RDL and DL designate three uses. They help you choose gear, but they do not replace its manual or a look at its coils. Two atomizers carrying the same label can offer different sensations.

If you are coming from tobacco, start by identifying the gesture you want to keep or change. Our approach to vaping supports this move away from tobacco through the choice of gear and its settings. There is no required path from a tight draw to an open draw.

What does MTL mean and how do you recognize this draw?

MTL stands for "mouth to lung", or indirect inhalation. The vapor first goes into the mouth, then is inhaled. The air passage is generally narrow. People often speak of a tight draw, with a noticeable resistance when pulling.

The value of this description is practical: you are looking for a device designed to work with limited airflow. Almost fully closing a very open atomizer is not enough to make it an MTL. The air inlet under the coil, the chamber and the passage in the drip tip also contribute to the result.

The Leto RTA 24 MTL is a single-coil rebuildable designed for this use. It lets you adjust the air with a ring at the base. Its build still needs to be measured and checked.

What distinguishes DL from RDL?

DL stands for "direct lung", also written DTL: the inhalation is direct. Air flows more freely than on an MTL and goes with a generally larger volume of vapor. This way of working requires a coil, liquid supply and airflow combination designed for it.

RDL, "restricted direct lung", keeps direct inhalation with a more limited air passage. It sits between tight and open uses without being a standardized value. One manufacturer may use RDL for an adjustment range quite different from another's.

The Leto RTA 20.24 is described for RDL, with the possibility of a more open draw. Despite the similar name, it should not be confused with the Leto RTA 24 MTL. The identical diameter does not determine the draw.

Which criteria should you compare before buying?

Read the product page in a practical order: stated draw, compatible coils, air adjustment, then maintenance. A box mod's maximum power does not tell you how its atomizer behaves when you pull.

Use Gesture What to examine
MTL Vapor held in the mouth before inhaling Precise adjustment of a low airflow
RDL Direct inhalation with restriction Consistency between opening and coil
DL More open direct inhalation Liquid supply and power range

Add your daily constraints: refill access, consumables, pocket space and time spent on building. Choosing a draw does not decide for you between a clearomizer and a rebuildable. Both families can offer several uses.

Is a value in ohms enough to define the draw?

No. Electrical resistance is part of the build, but its figure describes neither the airflow nor the construction of the coil. A value under one ohm does not automatically turn an atomizer into a DL.

On a clearomizer, use the coil series indicated and the power range specific to the value chosen. The Titan clearomizer, for example, offers distinct coils and usage ranges. Follow the instructions of the coil actually installed, without applying those of another version.

On a rebuildable, check the coil's position, its liquid supply and the stability of its value. The guide to coils and replacing them helps you read this information. The power setting comes after these checks, within the intended limits.

How do you adjust airflow without upsetting the whole build?

Start from the configuration recommended in the manual. On an electronic box mod, stay within the range indicated for the coil. Then change one setting at a time, in small steps, to understand what changes.

If you open the air, observe how easy the pull is and how the vapor behaves. If you tighten it, do not immediately try to compensate with more power. Stop in case of a dry taste, unusual spitting or abnormal heating, then check the whole setup.

The Apogée 24 illustrates gear offering MTL and RDL with matching coils, an airflow ring and drip tips. This range is stated on its product page; it should not be extended by analogy to all clearomizers.

What should you look at on the e-liquid side?

Start with the indications for the atomizer and its coil. Then check the composition, the PG/VG ratio and the strength on your e-liquid's product page. This information is read together; the name of a flavor says nothing about its technical compatibility.

Do not infer a nicotine dosage from the MTL or DL label alone. Choosing a strength is a separate subject, covered in our nicotine guide. Here, the goal is to recognize how the gear works before buying.

If you compare two settings, first keep the same e-liquid and the same build. You will then be able to describe the difference in draw without stacking changes. The product pages in the e-liquids section then let you check each reference.

How do you choose between simplicity and personal settings?

A clearomizer uses a complete coil that you replace. An RTA receives the coil and cotton that you install. The first requires less build preparation; the second adds adjustment possibilities and checks.

See the clearomizer, RTA and RDA comparison if this choice is still open. Note what you expect: tight or free pull, quick maintenance or a personal build. You can then browse atomizers with precise criteria rather than a power target.

Frequently asked questions

Does a narrow drip tip turn a DL into an MTL?

No. The drip tip only changes part of the air passage. The coil, the chamber and the air inlets must also be designed for a tight draw.

Is RDL a required step after MTL?

No. These terms describe uses, not experience levels. You can keep the same draw or change it according to your preferences and the gear you use.

Can you get MTL with a rebuildable?

Yes, when it is designed for it. Choose an RTA stated as MTL, follow its build instructions and measure the resistance before use, including after putting the cap back on.
